As a keen naturalist, Coleman published many books on flora and fauna, woodlands and butterflies, he also collaborated with other artists to produce numerous book collections of illustrations, in pastels, pen and ink, wood block prints, and watercolors. Although classically influenced, Coleman, painted many portraits in oils and realistically detailed paintings of cottage gardens, and rural country life.
