Called "Pinkie" by her grandmother who commissioned the portrait, Mrs. Barrett requested that her granddaughter be depicted "in an easy, careless attitude." Sarah died within a few months of the portrait's completion, from complications of tuberculosis. A Victorian favorite, Lawrence who was known for his idealized portrayal of childhood added to "Pinkie's" worldwide appreciation.
